What are the major differences between “narcissism” and ” social anxiety”?
Question by Romeo.: What are the major differences between “narcissism” and ” social anxiety”?
They both have a lot to do with self-absorption etc… Both narcissists and social anxious people are very conscious of themselves and care a lot about what others think of them. Both can suffer from low self-esteem and try to appear perfect to the outside world while in fact they aren’t.
@Mattew Social anxious people are self absorbent with the belief that they are being watch, criticize, judge……..in the end its also all about them and how they feel. It’s a from of narcissism.
Also a person with narcissistic disorder will not do “well” in social situation just life the social phobic.

Narcissists are ate up with themselves, everything they do is for themselves no matter who gets in the way. It is selfishness taken to the extreme. Social anxiety is worrying about what people will think of you taken to the extreme. So one is self center, the other is worry over what people see in you to extreme anxiety. So, they are almost oppisites

There are major differences between the two. “Narcissism” is a personality disorder and social anxiety is a type of anxiety disorder. Those with narcissistic personality disorder only care about themselves, are extremely superficial, and are grandiose with how they present themselves. They often take advantage of others and are very arrogant. Those with social anxiety, on the other hand, are merely shy, withdrawn, and anxious around others. They care about others and are not superficial nor arrogant. I can see what you mean with how they have their similarities because narcissists are fearful of scrutiny and negative feedback as are those who suffer from social anxiety, but the differences between the two outweigh the similarity.
Narcissists are typically extroverts who exaggerate their achievements to others, suck up to those in power, and taunt or humiliate people. Narcissists usually possess a grandiose sense of self and low empathy. Those with social anxiety are introverted and avoidant. They may or may not have empathy. They may or may not be arrogant or malicious. They may or may not be manipulative and use others to their advantage. Usually for social anxiety, this is not the case.
